US-Israel Strikes Hit South Pars Gas Facilities in Assaluyeh — Phases 3–6 Offline, Fires Reported
South Pars petrochemical facilities in Assaluyeh were targeted by air strikes. Iranian state television reported that US-Israel strikes on Wednesday (27 Esfand) targeted major gas facilities at South Pars, causing fires. IRIB, citing the Deputy Governor of Bushehr Province, stated that parts of the gas facilities in the South Pars Special Economic Energy Zone in Assaluyeh were struck by projectiles fired by the US and Israel. The Governor of Assaluyeh told Iranian media that "several phases of South Pars" were struck and that "these phases have been taken offline to control and prevent the spread of fire." Fars News Agency, affiliated with the IRGC, reported that storage tanks and facilities at "various phases — refinery phases 3, 4, 5, and 6" were targeted. Axios, citing Israeli officials, reported the attack was coordinated with the US and the Trump administration, noting it is the first time Israel has struck Iran's natural gas infrastructure, which is vital to its economy. Earlier reports indicated the United States had objected to Israel's strikes on Tehran oil depots without Washington's approval. The South Pars gas field, jointly operated by Iran and Qatar, is the world's largest known natural gas reserve; the refineries in Assaluyeh process gas extracted from this field. The complex includes 13 refineries that inject an average of over 600 million cubic meters of sweet gas daily into Iran's national grid, supplying approximately 70% of the country's gas consumption. South Pars plays a central role in Iran's domestic energy supply and petrochemical industries. Iran produces 75% of its natural gas from South Pars fields, and it is estimated that 80% of Iran's electricity grid is powered by natural gas. The IRGC issued an urgent warning listing several major regional oil, gas, and petrochemical facilities as potential targets, including: SAMREF refinery in Saudi Arabia, Al-Hosn gas field in the UAE, Jubail petrochemical complex in Saudi Arabia, Mesaieed petrochemical complex and Mesaieed Holding Company in Qatar, and Ras Laffan refinery (phases 1 and 2) in Qatar. The warning called on all citizens, residents, and workers near these facilities to evacuate immediately.
