Axios: US, Iran, and Regional Mediators Discussing 45-Day Ceasefire Deal — Agreement in 48 Hours Unlikely

Axios, citing four sources, reports that the US, Iran, and a group of regional mediators are discussing terms of a potential 45-day ceasefire that could lead to a permanent end to the war. Axios, citing American, Israeli, and regional sources, added: "The chance of reaching a partial agreement in the next 48 hours is low. But this last attempt is the only chance to prevent a significant escalation of the war, which would include large-scale attacks on Iranian civilian infrastructure and retaliation against energy and water facilities in Gulf countries." Four knowledgeable sources said the negotiations are taking place through mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, as well as through written messages exchanged between Steve Witkoff, Trump's envoy, and Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister. Sources said mediators are negotiating with both sides on terms of a two-phase agreement. Phase 1 would be a potential 45-day ceasefire, during which negotiations toward a permanent end to the war would take place. One source said the ceasefire could be extended if more time is needed. Phase 2 would be an agreement on permanently ending the war.
